The MTV Video Music Awards has removed the Afrobeats category after introducing it three years ago. This means the history of this category will only ever have three winners.
Rema and Selena Gomez took the inaugural award in 2023 for “Calm Down,” and Tyla followed with back-to-back wins in 2024 and 2025, first for “Water” and then for “PUSH 2 START.”
The cut is part of a wider restructuring that retired nine categories total, including Best Pop Artist, Best Rock, Best Group, and Album of the Year. Despite how popular and diverse the category was, MTV has not yet announced the reason behind this decision.
This years MTV VMAs will take place on Sunday 27 September.
